Description

Spared from the refuse of a sporting goods store, Mickey Mantle is confirmed as the “finest in the field” on this 1956 Rawlings cardboard advertisement. Measuring approximately 13-1/2 x 17”, the large black-and-white picture is contemporary with Mantle’s Triple Crown exploits. The pinstriped hero rests on his trusty club while wearing a Rawlings right-handed glove. Photographic evidence confirms that this promotional portrait was pared from a much larger piece, with most of the borders and “Player of the Year—1956” date confirmation missing. Although the surface has sustained a combination of wear including scuffing, creasing and pin holes, this display item is still ideal for “Commerce Comet” faithful. The full-sized Mantle/Rawling piece (also pictured) has sold for five figures so this parred down edition should draw considerable interest.
