Though the 1949 Pittsburgh Pirates were to endure the first of a (then) franchise-worst nine straight losing seasons (since surpassed by the current stretch of 18 and counting), fans flocked to Forbes Field to see the exploits of the likes of Ralph Kiner, who launched 54 round-trippers to pace the Senior Circuit for a fourth straight season. The offered ONL Giles ball is autographed by (27) of those 1951 Bucs, including Kiner and the ever-tough Bonham (died after undergoing an appendectomy that season) and Casey (killed by a self-inflicted shotgun blast in 1951). The creamy sphere (grade "5") presents nicely, though it does have an area of discoloration where moisture has pooled. The blue ink signatures, meanwhile, have faded over time and average ("5") strength and clarity. Includes: Sweet Spot: Kiner and Dickson (d.1989); North Panel: unidentified, Higbie (d.1985), Walker (d.1982), Bonham (d.1949), Hopp (d.2003) and Muncrief (d.1996); South Panel: unidentified, Dickson (repeat signature), Main (d.1992), Levy (coach), Basgall (d.2005), Rojek (d.19897) and Casey (d.1951); West Panel: Werle, Meyer (d.1957, manager), Herman (coach, signature "8-9" and appears to have been added at a later date), Fitz Gerald, V. Lombardi (d.1997), Gregg (d.1991) and unidentified; East Panel: Holt (d.1991), Bockman, Chesnes (d.1979), Sewell (d.1989) and Beard; Opposite Sweet Spot: Riddle (d.1984).
