The nineteenth-century baseball enthusiast will assuredly be interested in this circa 1888 Gehrig Studios Jack Croghan (Chicago Maroons) cabinet. Having played against competition such as the Davenport Onion Weeders, Des Moines Prohibitionists, Omaha Omahogs and the St. Paul Apostles--the minor league journeyman spent his only season in the “Windy City” with the Maroons of the Class A Western Association. The copyrighted image was used in the coveted N172 Old Judge Maroons subset and is neatly mounted on an approximately 4-1/4 x 5-1/2 slab of period cardboard. Published by Gehrig Studios of downtown Chicago, Croghan is identified as the subject via fountain pen etchings on the reverse. Also noticeable on the back is a vintage stamping and erased pencil writing. The obverse has endured the century in remarkable condition with superficial surface abrasions, moderate soiling and fingerprint impressions as the only serious detractors.
